"Photographs are made not taken."

James Mokler grew up along the Mississippi River in central Minnesota, and attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied art and science. He graduated with a degree in Biology and continues to study and photograph the world that surrounds him.

For over 40 years he has photographed the North American landscape. Many of his images were made with large format cameras, starting with the 4X5, then moving on to 5X7 field cameras to utilize the more traditional landscape format. The transition to digital has been a gradual process and he is now working with multiple images, combining them into one large file, to get the detail, depth, and image quality of the large format print.

“My photographs strive to capture intangible qualities, the essence of the subject, not distorted by color, concentrating on form, shadows and especially details. They are a slice in time, recording the effects of events that led up to that moment, made unique by the digital process, paper and choice of pigments, in an attempt to share some of the beauty, mystery, and wonder that make my life meaningful.” James Mokler

His photographs are in multiple collections and can be viewed here, on his website at jamesmokler.com or on his Instagram account https://www.instagram.com/jim_mokler.
